Background of the Study
Substance abuse among adolescents has emerged as a major public health challenge, with far-reaching consequences for mental health. In Delta State, the increasing availability of illicit drugs, alcohol, and prescription medications has led to a surge in substance use among young people. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of substance abuse due to the ongoing development of the brain and heightened susceptibility to peer pressure. Substance abuse has been linked to a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders (Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2024). In Delta State, socioeconomic challenges, urban stressors, and a lack of robust preventive education contribute to the initiation and continuation of substance use among adolescents. Moreover, the stigma associated with substance abuse and mental health problems often prevents young people from seeking help, leading to a cycle of worsening mental health and increased drug dependency. Understanding the interrelationship between substance abuse and mental health is critical for designing effective intervention programs that address both issues concurrently. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents in Delta State and to examine its effects on their mental health, with the goal of informing comprehensive, multifaceted interventions.
Statement of the Problem
In Delta State, substance abuse among adolescents is alarmingly high and is closely linked to deteriorating mental health outcomes. Many young people engage in substance use as a coping mechanism for stress, peer pressure, and economic hardship, yet this behavior often leads to a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders (Okoro, 2023). The lack of effective preventive education and early intervention programs exacerbates the situation, leaving many adolescents vulnerable to the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. Furthermore, societal stigma and limited access to mental health services contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment, resulting in a vicious cycle of substance abuse and mental health deterioration. The current gap in empirical data regarding the specific mental health effects of substance abuse among adolescents in Delta State hinders the development of targeted public health interventions. Addressing this gap is essential to mitigate the negative impacts on this vulnerable population and to promote healthier behavioral outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents in Delta State.
2. To assess the impact of substance abuse on mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety.
3. To recommend comprehensive interventions to address substance abuse and improve mental health among adolescents.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents in Delta State?
2. How does substance abuse affect mental health outcomes in this population?
3. What interventions can effectively reduce substance abuse and its negative mental health impacts?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher rates of substance abuse are significantly associated with increased depression and anxiety among adolescents.
2. Socioeconomic factors are major predictors of substance abuse and poor mental health outcomes.
3. Integrated intervention programs will significantly reduce substance abuse and improve mental health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study targets adolescents (aged 13-19) in both urban and rural areas of Delta State. Data will be collected via anonymous surveys, standardized mental health assessment tools, and interviews with school counselors. Limitations include potential underreporting due to stigma and the cross-sectional nature of the study.
